Auckland has soil and plant movement controls (kauri dieback)
Moving soil, plant material, or soil-contaminated gear (garden tools, outdoor furniture, mower decks) into or out of a kauri protection zone is restricted under the National Plan for Kauri. Clean equipment of soil before you move it.

Example moving plan
Here's a simplified example of how Navaroa might organise a move from Auckland to Wellington. Your actual plan will depend on your timing, housing situation, household, pets, vehicles and other details.
8+ weeks before moving
Get your next home sorted
This early decision shapes almost everything else about the move -- your date, whether you need storage, and how long you might need temporary accommodation.
This stage can include: Housing
6-8 weeks before moving
Start locking in the physical move
With your new home taking shape, this is when the big logistics get booked, so they are not a last-minute scramble. Auckland has soil and plant movement controls (kauri dieback) -- clean garden tools and outdoor gear of soil before you pack them.
This stage can include: Removalists · Packing & storage · Pets
2-4 weeks before moving
Sort your household and services
Time to start switching the everyday things over, and organise anything specific to your household.
This stage can include: Address changes & admin
1-2 weeks before moving
Moving week
The final logistics and admin that only really make sense right before or during the move itself.
This stage can include: Address changes & admin
Your actual Navaroa plan goes further
The example above is deliberately simplified. When you create your own plan, Navaroa breaks these stages into the individual tasks that apply to your move, based on your timing, housing situation, household and other details.
Housing · Removalists · Packing & storage · Pets · Address changes & admin

Leaving Auckland
New Zealand's largest city and its most competitive rental market.
Good news if you're a landlord: Auckland's rental demand means a vacancy here rarely stays empty for long — just note that also means less room to negotiate your own move-out date once a replacement tenant's lined up. Book your final bond inspection early — property managers get booked solid toward the end of the month.
If you're selling, it's worth agreeing your settlement date against your own moving logistics up front, since buyers keen for early possession will often ask. And if you have any say in timing, building peak-hour traffic into the schedule pays off — it adds real hours to a moving day here.
Useful resources
- Auckland Council — rates, rubbish collection days, building consents, local services
- Auckland Transport — public transport, motorway/traffic info, parking
- Register your dog with Auckland Council — required within 3 months of getting a dog, or as soon as you move here with one already registered elsewhere
The Auckland to Wellington run
around 640km via State Highway 1
It's around 640km down State Highway 1 -- a full day's drive in a car, and realistically longer for a loaded truck making its own stops. Ask your removalist directly whether your quote covers the trip in one day or includes an overnight stop for the crew, since that changes both the price and what you need to keep with you rather than load onto the truck.
If there's an overnight stop, keep anything you'll need before delivery -- medication, chargers, a change of clothes -- with you rather than in the load.
Most people drive their own car and meet the truck at the other end. Vehicle transport operators also service this route, worth a quote if you'd rather not do the drive yourself on moving day. Unlike a South Island move from here, there's no ferry to plan around -- it's a straightforward, if long, road trip.
This is a high-volume route for freight of all kinds, so if your dates have flexibility, it's worth asking whether a backload or partial-load rate is available -- treat that as a question for your removalist, not something to assume.
See our guide on removalist costs for what to compare across quotes for a job this size.

Moving to Wellington
New Zealand's capital, built on steep hills around a harbour, with an economy centred on government and the public service.
Wellington's character homes are part of the appeal, but if you're looking at anything older, ask for the property's current earthquake rating (%NBS) and documentation directly rather than assuming — the rules around this are under legislative reform, so check the Building Act/MBIE's current guidance for the specifics.
Because of the hills, bus routes aren't always direct — check the specific route for any address you're considering, not just its distance from the centre.
Housing stock skews older and full of character, often on sections with real elevation change, so it's worth checking accessibility (stairs, driveway steepness) if that matters to you. And factor a property's wind exposure into a viewing, especially anything higher up or facing the harbour — it affects daily comfort more than people expect.

- Metlink — Wellington region public transport (bus, train, harbour ferry)
- Register your dog with Wellington City Council — switching your registration from another council is free
Frequently asked questions
About Wellington
- Is it harder to insure an older Wellington property?
- It genuinely can be. Insurers have tightened requirements for low-%NBS buildings since the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, and some will charge much higher premiums or decline cover outright below a certain rating. Get an actual insurance quote before committing to a purchase, not after.
