Moving with pets within New Zealand is a different problem from bringing a pet into the country -- the paperwork is minimal, but the logistics and the settling-in period still need real planning.

Getting your pet there

For most local and regional moves, car travel is simplest -- a secure crate or harness, water on hand, and breaks on longer trips. If you're crossing Cook Strait, both Interislander and Bluebridge carry pets, but you must declare them at the time of booking -- ferries have limited animal capacity and can decline boarding if you haven't. Dogs generally travel in your vehicle or an onboard kennel; cats need a secure, escape-proof carrier.

For longer domestic moves, Air New Zealand carries cats and small dogs as checked baggage on some domestic routes, with no vet or vaccination paperwork required for travel within NZ -- a genuinely simpler process than international pet import, which involves MPI biosecurity clearance and doesn't apply here.

Sorting the paperwork

1. Update your pet's microchip details with the NZ Companion Animal Register as soon as you have a new address -- a chip with outdated details doesn't help if your pet goes missing during the move itself.
2. Register your dog with your new council once you've moved -- registration is tied to the council where a dog is ordinarily kept, so this applies even if it's already registered elsewhere.
3. Ask your current vet to transfer or provide records to a practice near your new home, especially if any treatment or vaccination is due soon.

Settling in

1. Keep your pet in one room at first, especially cats, rather than giving them the whole house immediately -- a smaller, familiar-smelling space reduces stress in the first few days.
2. Bring familiar bedding, toys, and feeding routines across unchanged -- consistency matters more than the new space being perfect.
3. Check the new property's fencing and boundaries before letting a dog off-lead, even in a securely fenced-looking yard -- worth a proper check on day one, not an assumption.
