Auckland has soil and plant movement controls (kauri dieback)
Moving soil, plant material, or soil-contaminated gear (garden tools, outdoor furniture, mower decks) into or out of a kauri protection zone is restricted under the National Plan for Kauri. Clean equipment of soil before you move it.

Example moving plan
Here's a simplified example of how Navaroa might organise a move from Auckland to Tauranga. Your actual plan will depend on your timing, housing situation, household, pets, vehicles and other details.
8+ weeks before moving
Get your next home sorted
This early decision shapes almost everything else about the move -- your date, whether you need storage, and how long you might need temporary accommodation.
This stage can include: Housing
6-8 weeks before moving
Start locking in the physical move
With your new home taking shape, this is when the big logistics get booked, so they are not a last-minute scramble. Auckland has soil and plant movement controls (kauri dieback) -- clean garden tools and outdoor gear of soil before you pack them.
This stage can include: Removalists
2-4 weeks before moving
Sort your household and services
Time to start switching the everyday things over, and organise anything specific to your household.
This stage can include: Utilities
1-2 weeks before moving
Moving week
The final logistics and admin that only really make sense right before or during the move itself.
This stage can include: Address changes & admin
Anytime
No fixed timing
Worth doing at some point, without a specific ideal week.
This stage can include: Pets · Housing
Your actual Navaroa plan goes further
The example above is deliberately simplified. When you create your own plan, Navaroa breaks these stages into the individual tasks that apply to your move, based on your timing, housing situation, household and other details.
Housing · Removalists · Utilities · Address changes & admin · Pets

Leaving Auckland
New Zealand's largest city and its most competitive rental market.
Good news if you're a landlord: Auckland's rental demand means a vacancy here rarely stays empty for long — just note that also means less room to negotiate your own move-out date once a replacement tenant's lined up. Book your final bond inspection early — property managers get booked solid toward the end of the month.
If you're selling, it's worth agreeing your settlement date against your own moving logistics up front, since buyers keen for early possession will often ask. And if you have any say in timing, building peak-hour traffic into the schedule pays off — it adds real hours to a moving day here.

The Auckland to Tauranga run
around 210km, via SH2 through the Karangahake Gorge or SH1/SH29 via Hamilton and the Kaimai Range
Auckland and Tauranga are connected by two genuinely different routes, and it's worth asking your removalist which one they use rather than assuming: the more direct SH2 route through the Karangahake Gorge, or the longer SH1-then-SH29 route via Hamilton and over the Kaimai Range, which some drivers prefer despite the extra distance. The gorge road is narrower and more winding, with a reputation among locals as the tougher of the two drives; the Kaimai route trades that for a more open crossing, at the cost of going via Hamilton first.
Either way, it's around 210km -- roughly two and a half to three hours by car, and realistically doable as a single same-day trip for most removalists, unlike the country's genuine long-distance corridors. That's worth confirming directly, though: ask whether your quote covers the trip in one day or assumes an overnight stop for the crew.
If your truck takes the Kaimai route, the range crossing itself is the one place worth building in some buffer -- it's a winding, hilly stretch that can slow a loaded truck more than the flat-road distance suggests, especially in poor weather.
Because this is realistically a one-day job either way, there's little reason to look at vehicle transport for your own car -- most people just drive it themselves, whichever route they take.

Moving to Tauranga
New Zealand's largest export port and one of its fastest-growing cities.
The harbour bridge and CBD can be a real bottleneck at peak times — check actual peak-time travel from any specific address, not just the map distance.
The job market is strong in horticulture, logistics, and port operations, and growing in trades and services — worth knowing if you're after a specialist or corporate role specifically, since Auckland and Wellington still have deeper markets for those.

Frequently asked questions
About Tauranga
- Is Tauranga actually good for a beach lifestyle, or is that overstated?
- It's genuinely one of the city's real draws -- Mount Maunganui's ocean beach and the Papamoa coastline are both a short drive (often walkable from the right suburb) rather than a day trip, which isn't true of most NZ cities this size. Central Tauranga and the Mount itself sit closest but cost more; Papamoa trades a few minutes' extra distance for newer, more affordable housing still close to the sand.
