Moving to New Zealand from Sri Lanka

A practical guide to moving from Sri Lanka to New Zealand -- visa pathways, Central Bank migration allowance rules, driver licence conversion, pet import, and setting up your first weeks.

What changes when you move from Sri Lanka to New Zealand

  • Moving money out of Sri Lanka goes through a formal migration allowance process, not just a bank transfer. Sri Lanka's exchange control framework, administered by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), sets specific allowances for people emigrating -- current settings allow up to USD 150,000 for someone with permanent residency in another country migrating from Sri Lanka, or a first-time Migration Allowance of up to USD 100,000 during the applicable scheme period, alongside a USD 15,000 threshold for declaring cash carried out. These figures and the scheme's terms change, so confirm the current rules directly with the CBSL's Department of Foreign Exchange well before you plan to move funds.
  • Your driving licence doesn't convert automatically. Sri Lanka isn't on NZTA's exempt-country list, so you'll need to sit the NZ theory test and, in most cases, a practical test.
  • New Zealand's systems are centralised -- one immigration authority, one tax office, nationwide tenancy rules.
  • Pets go through the standard rabies-country pathway -- microchip, rabies vaccination, a titre test on a fixed schedule, and quarantine on arrival.

This is general planning information, not immigration, tax, or financial advice. Confirm your own eligibility and current limits with the relevant authority before making a decision you can't easily reverse.

Before you leave Sri Lanka

Your first days in New Zealand

  1. Get a local SIM and data plan as soon as you land.
  2. Apply for your IRD number at ird.govt.nz using your passport and visa -- doable before you have a bank account, and the confirmation letter works as proof of address at the bank.
  3. Open a New Zealand bank account -- ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB, and Westpac all accept new arrivals with a passport and proof of address.
  4. Register with a GP once you have an address, after checking your healthcare eligibility below.
  5. Use ride share or public transport until your driving situation is sorted.

Setting up your life in NZ

Choosing where to live

Auckland is the most common landing point for its size and job market, though it has the tightest rental market and heaviest car dependency of the main centres. Wellington is more compact with better public transport; Christchurch and Hamilton are generally more affordable. If a later domestic move is possible, our Auckland to Wellington and Auckland to Christchurch guides cover that transition in more depth. For the practical side of searching, applying, and inspecting a property, see Navaroa's guide to finding a place to live in New Zealand.

What to plan for differently

  • Driving: you'll need to sit the NZ theory test and, in most cases, a practical test. See NZTA: converting to a NZ driver licence.
  • Moving savings or sale proceeds: unlike a routine relocation-cost transfer, moving a meaningful sum out of Sri Lanka goes through the CBSL's formal migration allowance process -- start this well ahead of your move date, since it involves documentation and isn't instant.
  • Professional licensing: regulated professions (medicine, engineering, accounting) require separate registration with the relevant NZ body -- confirm this before you move, since it's often the longest step.
  • Pet import timeline: budget 4-6 months for the full biosecurity process.
  • Climate: New Zealand's climate is far cooler and more seasonal than Sri Lanka's tropical climate -- pack properly for a genuinely cold, wet winter, especially in Wellington and the South Island.

Your first month

Weeks 1-2: IRD number, bank account, GP registration, utilities connected, local phone plan.

Weeks 2-4: enrol children at school if applicable, book your driver licence theory test, confirm healthcare eligibility, arrange insurance once your lease or purchase settles.

By the end of month one: working bank account, IRD number, GP, insured home, and your driver licence conversion process underway.
