Whether you need to do anything about water meters when you move depends entirely on where you're moving to -- New Zealand doesn't have one national approach to water charging.

Not every property is charged for water usage

Some councils charge for water by volume through a meter, others fund water supply entirely through general rates with no separate usage charge, and some use a mix -- a fixed annual charge plus a per-cubic-metre rate once you're over a daily allowance. Both fixed charges and per-unit rates vary a lot between councils, so there's no single "typical" water bill to budget against -- check with your specific new council rather than assuming your old arrangement carries over.

If your new property is metered

Where a property is on metered water, the meter is normally read directly by the council or its water provider, not by you -- similar to how power works, but usually without a retailer-switch process, since most councils are the only water supplier in their area.

1. Take a photo of the meter reading on the day you move, even if you're not asked to -- useful evidence if a dispute over usage ever comes up.
2. Check whether the water account is billed to the property or to you as the occupant -- this affects whether you need to set anything up at all, versus a landlord or new owner needing to update their own details.
3. If you're a homeowner, confirm with your council whether water charges transfer automatically through your property purchase, similar to rates, or need a separate step.

If your new property isn't metered

If water is funded through general rates instead, there's genuinely nothing to arrange -- it's already covered by the rates you're paying regardless.
