Update your address via myIR or by phone so tax correspondence, Working for Families payments, and any refunds reach you without delay. Takes a couple of minutes online if you already have a myIR login.
How to do it
- Log into myIR and update your address under your profile details — if you don't have a myIR login yet, it's worth setting one up rather than calling, since most other IRD tasks are easier through the same account afterwards.
- Do this as soon as you know your new address, even before moving day — correspondence sent to your old address in the meantime won't automatically follow you, and a missed letter about tax or Working for Families can be genuinely disruptive to sort out after the fact.
- Check Working for Families and student loan details at the same time if either applies — they're managed through related logins but are easy to forget once the main address field is updated.
- If you're self-employed or expecting a refund around your move date, double-check the address update has actually saved before moving day — a refund cheque or correspondence to the wrong address takes longer to redirect than it would to have gotten right the first time.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a change of address with NZ Post or your bank automatically updates IRD too — it doesn't, each organisation needs telling separately.
- Waiting until after the move to update it, so anything sent in the gap goes to the old address.
- Forgetting Working for Families or student loan details, which sit under related but separate sections of myIR.
