Deadlines vary a lot by state -- from 2 weeks in Tasmania to 3 months in WA and the NT.

Every state gives a window to transfer registration after you move there, but it genuinely differs: Tasmania gives 14 days, NSW requires it once you'll be staying longer than 90 days, and WA, SA, and the NT allow up to 3 months. Most states also require a roadworthy inspection first -- check your specific new state's transport authority rather than assuming your old state's rules carry over.
