Snow-capped Mount Ruapehu rising above farmland in the Manawatū-Whanganui region

Manawatū-Whanganui Region

A large, agriculturally rich central North Island region anchored by Palmerston North -- home to some of New Zealand's most versatile farmland and a genuine agrifood research hub.

Manawatū-Whanganui is centred on Palmerston North, with Whanganui, Levin and Feilding as the other main towns across a predominantly rural region. It holds an outsized share of New Zealand's best farmland -- 18% of the country's Class 1 soils and 14% of its Class 2 soils, the most versatile agricultural and horticultural land in NZ -- and has the largest sheep flock in the North Island.

Palmerston North's own economy leans into that: it's a recognised freight-distribution hub thanks to its central-NZ location and good hinterland access for export commodities, and it brands itself as New Zealand's agrifood-innovation centre -- FoodHQ, a national food-sector research collective, is based there, and the city was the first in NZ with its own agritech strategy. Massey University's original campus (established in 1927 as Massey Agricultural College) is also in Palmerston North, adding a genuine student population and research presence on top of the farming economy.

Whanganui, on the other side of the region, has its own distinct character built around the Whanganui River and a smaller, more heritage-focused town centre -- a genuinely different pace and feel to Palmerston North, despite being in the same region.
