Hamilton Region
New Zealand's fourth-largest city, on the Waikato River, about 1.5 hours' drive south of Auckland.
If you'll be commuting to Auckland regularly, budget on driving (about 1.5 hours each way) rather than the Te Huia train — its limited weekday schedule isn't realistic for most daily commutes.
Useful resources
- Hamilton City Council — rates, rubbish collection, building consents, local services
- Waikato Regional Council — regional transport and environmental services
- Register your dog with Hamilton City Council — required by 3 months old, or as soon as you move here with one already registered elsewhere
Frequently asked questions
- Is Hamilton on the coast?
- No — it's inland on the Waikato River. The nearest beach, Raglan, is about 45km/40 minutes' drive away. If day-to-day beach access matters to you, that's a real trade-off compared with Tauranga or Auckland.
