Room-by-room is a perfectly good way to organise your packing for an Australian move — but distance adds a layer most room-by-room guides don't cover. A move across town and a move across the country put very different stress on the same box, so alongside working through room by room, it's worth thinking about distance too: what needs to survive several days in a truck, not just a careful carry to the curb.

How long your things actually sit in the truck

A local move means your boxes are loaded and unloaded within a few hours. An interstate move is a different proposition entirely — the truck can be on the road for several days before it reaches you, and your belongings sit through however many stops, reloads, and depot transfers that involves. Anything that can't handle sitting still, unopened, for that stretch needs to travel with you instead of on the truck. Ask your removalist directly how your specific route is run — some interstate jobs go door to door on one vehicle, others get consolidated through a depot partway, and that changes how long any one box is actually in transit.

What Australian heat does to certain items

Summer heat is a genuine packing constraint here, not just a moving-day inconvenience. A truck or depot can sit well above the outside temperature for hours at a time, and a few categories of item don't cope with that:

These rules genuinely vary by state and are enforced at the border — what's fine to bring into one state can be confiscated at another's, so this is worth checking directly with your destination state's biosecurity authority rather than assuming your old state's rules still apply.

Apartment moves in the capitals

If either end of your move is an apartment in a capital-city CBD, check whether the building requires a booked lift slot or a loading-dock time window before you commit to a moving date — many do, and turning up without one can mean carrying everything up a fire stair instead. This is worth confirming with the building manager directly, since booking systems and lead times vary a lot by building.

Packing for a multi-day trip, not a single afternoon

A box that survives one careful carry to a truck and back out again isn't necessarily built for several days of being restacked, reloaded, and jolted around at highway speed. For anything going interstate, tape the base properly rather than relying on the fold, and don't assume a box that held up for a local move will hold up for one that takes days.
